Miami University Ohio Innocence Project

The Ohio Innocence Project-ungraduate (OIP-u) is the undergraduate branch of the Ohio Innocence Project. It currently extends to 7 undergraduate institutions including Ohio State, Xavier, University of Cincinnati and a few others. The goal is to raise awareness about the Innocence Project and the prevalence of wrongful convictions. OIP-u works closely with the Innocence Project to raise money for the non-profit organization. Their goal is gain a better understanding of how the legal system works and the impact it has on those who are sentenced to prison for a crime they did not commit. Ohio has currently exonerated 25 people and are working on new cases every day. OIP-u is here to spread the word and make sure that justice is served.

On February 22nd Ohio exoneree Dean Gillispie is coming to speak at Miami. It will be at 6:30 in Kreger 319. Dean was wrongfully convicted of rape, kidnapping and aggravated robbery. He served 20 years in prison and was finally exonerated in 2011. His story, like so many others, needs to be heard in order to understand the weight of what it is we are fighting against. OIP-u would like to invite you to come here his story and if you are moved what he says, to come join their cause.

CLEO Update

The Council on Legal Education Opportunity, Inc. (CLEO) has some exciting programs for pre-law students coming up! The programs are:

Pre-Law Summer Institute (PLSI) – Our flagship program, the PLSI is an intensive, summer boot camp prior to starting law school.  Students study as if they are in the first year of law school, undertaking substantive courses as well as research and writing courses.  This year the Pre-Law Summer Institute will be held at Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, June 10 – July 7.  There is a mandatory online course from May 24 – June 8. Students should visit the following link to register for the 2018 Pre-Law Summer Institute:  https://cleoinc.org/programs/pre-law-summer-institute
CLEO Legally Inspired Cohort (CLIC) is CLEO’s latest program to help diverse students gain access to the legal profession. A highly competitive program, only 20 students will be chosen to start law school in the fall of 2018 at one of four partner law schools.  Each group of five CLIC Scholars will:

  • Attend the CLEO Pre-Law Summer Institute
  • Enroll in one of the partner law schools as a CLIC Scholar
  • Work together throughout law school
  • Receive financial, academic and professional development support

For more information and to register, please visit: https://cleoinc.org/clic

An alternative to the Pre-Law Summer Institute is 1L Prep – Attitude Is Essential (AIE). Students must be prepared before the first day of classes to earn grades that will bolster their class ranking and that will impress potential employers. For less than the cost of a law school textbook ($100), students can give their legal education and legal career a boost. AIE will be held in five locations around the country. Students can find out more at this link: https://cleoinc.org/aie
